TOM SCANNED his membership card at the gym’s reception desk and wandered through the workout area until he found Peter by the free weights. The same feeling of relief that had hit him when he realized he’d made it home now threatened to swamp him again. He wanted to kneel at Peter’s feet, to throw his arms around Peter’s legs, but how would he explain that, either to Peter or the rest of the men working out? The manager would call the cops and have him taken away for psychiatric evaluation. So he pushed the relief aside and waited until Peter set the dumbbells down, then wove his way through the weights and benches. “Hey.” That was good, barely a tremor in his voice.

Peter looked up. “Hey, you made it!” He stood up and gave Tom a kiss on the cheek. “Dane, this is my… this is Tom. Tom, Dane.”

“Hey.” Dane had close-cropped dark hair, biceps as big as Tom’s head, and a bored expression on his face as he looked down at Tom. He didn’t offer to shake hands, and Tom wasn’t going to voluntarily touch one of those sweaty paws. When he stretched, obviously showing off, a whiff of sweat drifted from his pits, smelling like gasoline or maybe a lab experiment gone wrong. Tom recoiled, fighting not to gag.

“Hey.” Breathing through his mouth, Tom turned to Peter. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but… can we talk?”

“He’s right in the middle of a set,” Dane said, flexing his pecs as he moved to stand next to Peter.

Tom’s eyebrows went up, but he relaxed slightly when Peter ignored Dane, focusing on Tom.

“Is everything okay?”

“Can we go somewhere?”

“Yeah, of course.” Peter looked around at the busy gym. “Come on.” He led Tom into the locker room, where he sat them both down on a bench in a quiet corner. “What’s the matter?”

Tom had held it together since getting up from the sweet-smelling carpet in his office, but now that he was looking into Peter’s worried brown eyes, his calm cracked, splintered, shattered. “I thought I’d never see you again,” he said, his lips trembling. He burst into tears and launched himself at Peter.

“Whoa, hold on.” Peter wrapped his arms around Tom and held him tightly. “I’m here, it’s okay,” he said, petting Tom’s hair as Tom tightened his arms around Peter. “What happened? Are you okay? Do you need to go to the emergency room, or the police, or—”

“I’m fine. I’m okay. Just don’t let go.”

“I won’t.”

“I’m so sorry,” Tom sobbed. “I’m a dick. I know I am, but I’m just trying to be honest.”

“Okay.”

He reached up behind Peter’s back, pulling off his glasses to wipe his eyes. “It’s unrealistic to expect one person to be your everything, to, to, to… fulfill every one of your needs.”

“Sure.”

“And I like you so much, really, more than anyone I’ve ever met.”

“I like you too.”

Tom pulled back a little so he could look at Peter. “So I don’t want to hurt you by making promises that I can’t keep.
